The 23rd of August 2025 was a Watershed Moment, when the Advocates for Transformation (AFT), under the Leadership of the National Chairperson Advocate Myron Dewrance SC together with the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) launched their call-to-action campaign against Teenage Pregnancy. They used this moment to throw the full support of the Legal Fraternity for the fight against the National crisis of Teenage Pregnancy. This will culminate in the historical signing of the cooperation agreement between the AFT and the College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of the CMSA, University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
The CMSA was represented by Prof Komala Pillay, the President of the College of Pathologists (CMSA) and the Honorary Registrar of the FGCP Committee of the CMSA. The University of Pretoria was represented by Prof Flavia Senkubuge, the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof Kakaza, the acting Chair of the School of Medicine and the REI team. Prof Zozo Nene was invited to deliver the Keynote Address.
We were graced by honourable Judges, SC, Senior Advocates, Attorneys, leaders of various legal organizations like AFT Women’s desk, BLA, NADEL, SAWLA, Legal Practice Council (LPC), Legal Aid organizations, members of Gauteng, Free State, Eastern Cape, North West Bar and various other Constituent Bars, pupils and candidate attorneys.
It was also heart-warming to have the student Chapter of the AFT give support to our program.
The Legal Fraternity has come together to launch their Plan of Action, the #WeCare movement to combat Teenage Pregnancy under the theme: “My Sister’s Keeper”. This is a joint legal and healthcare movement to respond to and protect the children of this country.
This was also the launch of the 12-month national campaign: “My Body. My Rights. My Dreams.” under the #ItTakesaVillage. Which resonates with my plea that we need All hands on Deck to fight this scourge and protect the Future
