President

Prof Mariza Vorster is an associate Professor and Head of Department at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal’s Department of Nuclear Medicine. The nuclear medicine complex currently consists of 3 departments located at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital, King Edward Hospital and Addington Hospital. She is the current re-elected President of the Colleges of Nuclear Physicians and a long-standing examiner and convenor for the CMSA. She currently serves on the Examinations and Credentials Committee for the CMSA and also served on its management committee for several years. She is passionate about training nuclear medicine physicians that are fit-for-purpose, and who are sought after globally.Prof Vorster has significant experience in the use of alpha and beta targeted radionuclide therapies and started alpha therapy treatment with Ac-225-PSMA and DOTATATE in Kwa-Zulu-natal in Jan of 2023. She received international recognition for her contribution to the field of targeted alpha therapy with Ac-225 as a recipient of the ICPO’s Maurits W Geerlings award in 2023 in Munich.She is an IAEA expert and collaborator, and has authored and co-authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications (including several book chapters). Her research interests include the use of novel Ga-68 based tracer applications and theranostics aimed at solving important clinical problems. She aspires to making a meaningful difference by addressing diagnostic challenges that are unique to the South African setting in a cost-effective way.
