Final
- Completed three years fulltime in a numbered registrar post.
- Portfolio - Candidates who started their registrar training on or after 1 January 2013 will only be accepted if they have completed the CMSA approved portfolio available on our website.
The Final of the Fellowship of the College of Family Physicians of South Africa - R 24 650
Three online written papers as follows:
Paper 1 - multiple choice paper (single best type A and extended matching questions) without negative marking: forms 50% of the total (3 hours)
Paper 2 - short answer questions : forms 40% of the total (3 hours)
Paper 3 - critical reading of a journal article : forms 10% of the total (2 hours)
A candidate will be invited to the clinical examination if he/she achieves the passing score based on the standard set for the overall written component.
Final - can only be taken after 3 years of registrar training
The FCFP(SA) is only awarded once all requirements are fulfilled.
The Research Component (RC) will be assessed as part of the MMed (Family Medicine), a university requirement.
The awarding of medals is decided by the examination steering committee of each semester’s examination (convener, moderator, president, secretary and the writing group chairs).
Outlined below are the criteria for the medals from the CFP
Tim Quan Medal – The Tim Quan Medal was endowed in 2008 by Dr Tim Quan and is awarded to the candidate who achieves outstanding results in the Fellowship examination of the College of Family Physicians of South Africa. The mark must be 20% or more above the standard set cut score.
GA Ogunbanjo Award of Excellence – The GA Ogunbanjo award for excellence was endowed in 2021 by the Nigerian Doctors Forum of South Africa to commemorate Prof Gboyega Ogunbanjo. The award is presented to the best all-round candidate based on:
- FCFP examination results in the top 10%
- Recommendation from the national CCC that the learning portfolio is of such a quality that it merits the award.
- A letter of support from the relevant Head of Department/ postgraduate coordinator/ local CCC.
The Claude Harris Leon Medal – Awarded to a distinguished registrar who has exhibited excellence in their COPC and QIP projects. To be motivated by the relevant Head of Department/postgraduate coordinator/ local CCC.
Certificates of Merit
Awarded to all candidates who have marks of 20% or more above the standard set cut score, or 75% or above in non-standard set exams.

Since 2021, CMSA examinations have been conducted on an online platform. As a result, the questions remain within the secure question bank and can no longer be published on the website.
Release of FCFP(SA) Final results
Please note that the results for the FCFP(SA) Final examination will be released on the published date as per candidates’ letter of acceptance into the examination. If they are available earlier, the CFP will endeavour to inform candidates earlier of the provisional results.

APPEALS
PLEASE NOTE that candidates that wish to lodge an appeal against the outcome of his/her written examination results must do so in accordance with the provisions of the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) are not made available to candidates for review in accordance with the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.
