Fellowship of the College of Radiation Oncologists of South Africa: FC Rad Onc(SA)

Part I

Part I: 

  • hold a post-internship qualification to practise medicine
  • have trained in a recognised registrar training post for a minimum of 6 months, and be a registrar at the time of applying for the examination
  • An HoD letter including training number

Part I of the Fellowship of the College of Radiation Oncologists of South Africa - R 12 950

  • Part I: The examination will consist of three web based online examinations consisting of SBA (single best answer) or short question format
  • Each paper will consist of 100 marks and will be weighted equally 
  • The passmark for each paper will be determined by standard setting 

Part 1 medal: A candidate will be awarded the medal at graduation if all 3 papers are passed with a mark of 25% above the standard setting pass marks for each paper.

Certificate of merit: Certificate of merit can be awarded if all 3 papers are passed with an average of 15% above the standard setting pass mark for each paper.

Part II

Part II:

  • have successfully obtained Part I in the last 6 years
  • have been qualified to practice medicine for at least five years
  • have completed thirty-six months of instruction and training in a fulltime registrar post at ab accredited institution 
  • provide the following documents (see checklist in portfolio):
    • A list of 20 marked case reports
    • A marked statistical review of an oncology article
    • A summary of rotation and learning
    • An HoD letter citing and adequate academic progress and dated no more than six months prior 
    • When a candidate is no longer in a training post then the prior HoD letter plus a letter from the current employer showing evidence of ongoing work in oncology is required (dated no more than six months prior to the application and outlining current job description) 
    • A signed declaration by the candidate

Note: The full Portfolio, including all marked case reports, signed logbook of procedures and marked statistical review of an article must be submitted to the college at the time of confirmation of invitation to the OSPE and oral examination. 

Part II of the Fellowship of the College of Radiation Oncologists of South Africa - R 24 650

Part II: The examination will consist of three written papers which will be web based examinations:

  • Paper 1 - applied basic sciences - 100 SBA questions = 3 hours
  • Paper 2 - clinical short questions - 100 short SBA questions = 3 hours
  • Paper 3 - clinical long questions - 75 long SBA questions = 3 hours 

All papers will be equally weighted and will have a pass mark ascertained at standard setting 

All papers must be passed in order to be invited to the OSPE / structured oral examinations (SOE)

OSPE examinations will contain a minimum of 10 stations and must be passed overall 

SOE will include:

  • a clinical cases oral 
  • a portfolio oral 

Both orals must be passed 

Part II medal: a candidate will qualify for a medal only if the written examinations are passed with an average mark of >=25% above the average of the standard setting marks AND if an average mark of >=75% is achieved in the OSPE examination AND an average mark of 75% or more is achieved between the 2 orals. The candidate must then also be awarded a mark of >75% in an additional medal oral. Any candidate who declines an additional medal SOE will not receive the medal, and the existing marks will stand.

Certificate of merit: A candidate will be awarded a certificate of merit if the written examinations are passed with an average mark of >=15% above the average of the standard setting marks AND if an average mark of >= 65% is achieved in the OSPE examination AND an average mark of 65% or more is achieved between the 2 orals.

Release of FC Rad Onc(SA) Part II results

Please note that the results for the FC Rad Onc(SA) Part II examination will be released on the published date as per candidates’ letter of acceptance into the examination.  If they are available earlier, the C Rad Onc will endeavour to inform candidates earlier of the provisional results.

APPEALS

PLEASE NOTE that candidates that wish to lodge an appeal against the outcome of his/her written examination results must do so in accordance with the provisions of the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) are not made available to candidates for review in accordance with the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.
