MINISTER OF HEALTH TO ADDRESS 594 NEW MEDICAL SPECIALISTS AT CMSA ADMISSION CEREMONY IN JOHANNESBURG.

The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) will proudly admit 594 new members to its ranks during the Johannesburg Admission Ceremony hosted at the Rhema Bible Church North on Wednesday, 31 May 2023.

""We are truly honoured to have someone of Doctor Phaahla’s stature and influence to deliver the oration at the ceremony,” said Professor Eric Buch, Chief Executive Officer of the CMSA. “At this ceremony, we not only celebrate the wonderful achievements of our candidates who are now medical specialists, but it is also an opportunity to highlight the critical role that medical specialists fulfil in the South African health system and the key role for them within the NHI.”

The 594 candidates represent the 826 medical specialists from Gauteng and 53 from Polokwane who obtained CMSA Fellowships, Certificates and Diplomas: 292 medical specialists, 35 sub-specialists and 267 diplomates. The new CMSA members admitted at the Johannesburg Admission Ceremony represent 24 specialities including Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Neurology and Paediatrics.

Apart from offering Fellowships and Certificates to medical specialist and sub-specialists and in pursuit of its commitment to advance the standards of medical practice in underserved areas the CMSA offers postgraduate diplomas “The 267 diplomates are medical doctors who want to improve their practice capability by completing one of our Diploma examinations, e.g., the Diploma in Anaesthetics,” explained Prof Buch. “This is especially important for doctors working in rural hospitals where the qualifications enable them to improve on the standard and quality of care.”

The Johannesburg Admission Ceremony is the fourth of five ceremonies hosted by the CMSA across the country annually. These Admission Ceremonies are a highlight on the 2023 CMSA calendar to honour 1862 medical professionals who successfully passed CMSA examinations in 2022 and to admit them as CMSA members.

The event will be live-streamed and links to view will be made available.
