Dr Mandy Date-Chong

The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) has learned with great shock and tremendous sadness of the recent passing away of Dr Mandy Date-Chong.

Dr Date-Chong was a Specialist Forensic Pathologist in the Division of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, University of Cape Town and the Western Cape Forensic Pathology Services in Cape Town. She was an esteemed Diplomate and Fellow of the College of Forensic Pathologists. Moreover, Mandy was our good friend and respected colleague. She selflessly dedicated her life and career to public service and the noble pursuit of justice. Her impeccable skill and work ethic set the standard for medical professionalism and integrity.

Mandy excelled as a forensic practitioner, teacher and mentor. She was committed to advancing and uplifting the service, training and research platforms in Forensic Pathology in South Africa. To this effect, she initiated and promoted multinational partnerships by engaging with subject experts across the globe and establishing ongoing collaborations with our international counterparts.

In recent years, Mandy also served the CMSA as an Examiner for the various Diploma and Fellowship examinations offered by the College of Forensic Pathologists. She readily accepted and embraced this voluntary endeavor with an enthusiasm and responsibility that exceeded all expectations. In fact, her commitment did not waiver even during her illness.

Mandy was a genuinely wonderful human being. She was fearless, bold and outspoken with a natural warmth, compassion and generosity that complimented her sharp wit, refreshing honesty and endearing sense of humour. Many of us were indeed privileged to have worked alongside her and certainly blessed to have known her.

Dr Date-Chong is survived by her husband (Dr William Robinson) and two young children. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Robinson and Date-Chong families as well as all Mandy’s friends and colleagues during this difficult time. We share the loss and grieve with them. We sincerely offer our heartfelt condolences and the firm reassurance that Mandy’s legacy will remain etched in our hearts and memories.

May her good soul rest in eternal peace and rise again in glory!
