CMSA Appeals Mechanism

PLEASE NOTE that candidates that wish to lodge an appeal against the outcome of his/her written examination results must do so in accordance with the provisions of the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.  Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) are not made available to candidates for review in accordance with the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.  A copy of the Appeals Mechanism Policy is available at www.cmsa.co.za

Examination Structure


  • Primary: FCS(SA) Primary 2 MCQ papers, no oral examination.

  • Intermediate: FCS(SA) Intermediate 2 MCQ papers.

  • Final: 2 written papers;  Clinical cases, Chest Radiology and Angiography.

Medals

THE LIBERO FATTI MEDAL was donated by Davis & Geck in 1992 and was established in honour of the late Dr Libero Fatti, Associate Founder of the CMSA who pioneered cardiothoracic surgery in South Africa. The medal is awarded to distinguished candidates in the Fellowship examination of the College of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of South Africa.

Release of FC Cardio(SA) Final results

Please note that the results for the FC Cardio(SA) Final examination will be released on the published date as per candidates' letter of acceptance into the examination.  If they are available earlier, the C Cardio will endeavour to inform candidates earlier of the provisional results.

Requirements


  • Primary: - Successful completion of the Basic Surgical Skills course prior to applying for the examination.

  • Intermediate: - 12 months surgical training in approved posts. (Training during community service cannot be submitted). Must include 6 months general surgery and 3 months ICU.  ATLS required at the time of applying for the FCS(SA) Intermediate examination.

  • Final: - 48 months in a numbered registrar training post. Portfolio must be submitted at the time of applying for the Final examination.  Repeat candidates must include a current recommendation from the Head of the academic unit to confirm eligibility to sit for the FC Cardio(SA) examination.  Additionaly, an updated version of the portfolio of learning must be appended to their application.





In the interest of allowing candidates to be able to complete their portfolios to international standards we are extending the time period for them to reach the standard as per our current regulations.  These numbers were first published with effect from 1 January 2014 and therefore candidates who started their training prior to this date will be given leeway to be able to submit their logbooks with the previous minimum of 55 surgical cases.  Candidates who entered into their training after 1 January 2014 will have to meet the minimum requirement of 75 cases.
