Requirements

  • Primary: - hold a post-internship qualification to practice medicine which has been registered or is registrable with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

  • Intermediate: - 12 months surgical training in approved posts. (Training during community service cannot be submitted). Must include 6 months general surgery and 3 months ICU.

  • Final: - 48 months in a numbered registrar training post. Portfolio must be submitted at the time of applying for the Final examination.  Repeat candidates must include a current recommendation from the Head of the academic unit to confirm eligibility to sit for the FC Cardio(SA) examination.  Additionaly, an updated version of the portfolio of learning must be appended to their application.

In the interest of allowing candidates to be able to complete their portfolios to international standards we are extending the time period for them to reach the standard as per our current regulations.  These numbers were first published with effect from 1 January 2014 and therefore candidates who started their training prior to this date will be given leeway to be able to submit their logbooks with the previous minimum of 55 surgical cases.  Candidates who entered into their training after 1 January 2014 will have to meet the minimum requirement of 75 cases.
