CMSA Appeals Mechanism

PLEASE NOTE that candidates that wish to lodge an appeal against the outcome of his/her written examination results must do so in accordance with the provisions of the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.  Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) are not made available to candidates for review in accordance with the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.  A copy of the Appeals Mechanism Policy is available at www.cmsa.co.za

Examination Structure


  • Primary: FCS(SA) Primary 2 MCQ papers, no oral examination.

  • Intermediate: 2 written papers in the format of Single Best Answers (SBAs), no oral examination.

  • Final: 3 written papers;  Clinical and/or oral and/or OSCE.

Medals

The J M EDELSTEIN MEDAL was endowed by the late Prof Edelstein, Associate Founder of the CMSA, in 1966 and is awarded to candidates who show a very high standard of proficiency in the Fellowship examination of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Release of FC Orth(SA) Final results

Please note that the results for the FC Orth(SA) Final examination will be released on the published date as per candidates' letter of acceptance into the examination.  If they are available earlier, the C Orth Surg will endeavour to inform candidates earlier of the provisional results.

Requirements


  • Primary: - Post-internship qualification registered with the HPCSA or any other medical council.



  • Intermediate: -  Must have completed not less than 18 months of approved training in surgery.  Of this, 3 months should in an Intensive Care Unit, 12 months in Orthopaedic Surgery and the remainder in General Surgery. The ATLS is required at the time of applying for the Intermediate examination.



  • Final: -

  • 1 been qualified to practise for a period of not less than four years (two years of internship and community service NOT to form part of this period)
    2 training is valid for a period of three years out of rotation. Two more years of training would need to be repeated if candidates are out of training for longer than three years
    3 served a period of not less than 3 years training in a recognised orthopaedic training post certified by the academic head of the department of orthopaedic surgery
    4 candidates must produce at the time of examination entry certificates covering orthopaedic training for both Intermediate and Final ie a minimum of three years
    5 The FC Orth(SA) consolidated portfolio spreadsheet must be submitted to be able to register for the written examination. Candidates will be asked to update this portfolio prior to the Orals.
    6 If invited to the oral examination, the candidate must provide a consolidated portfolio update for assessment during the examination.
    7 logbook data may be analysed for educational purposes and possible publication (patient identification delinked)
    8 Candidates entering into their registrar training form 1 January 2018 must use the LogBox online portfolio. This is a free service and the app is available in both Apple and Android format. Please register at www.logbox.co.za
