CMSA Appeals Mechanism

PLEASE NOTE that candidates that wish to lodge an appeal against the outcome of his/her written examination results must do so in accordance with the provisions of the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.  Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) are not made available to candidates for review in accordance with the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.  A copy of the Appeals Mechanism Policy is available at www.cmsa.co.za

Examination Structure


  • Primary: FCS(SA) Primary 2 MCQ papers AND a Neuroanatomy paper, no oral examination.

  • Intermediate: 2 written MCQ papers, no oral examination. FCS(SA) Intermediate Paper 1 and the FC Neurosurg(SA) Intermediate Paper 2 consisting of single best answer (SBA) questions on the principles of Neurosurgery.

  • Final EFFECTIVE till SS 2019

  • One 3-hour MCQ paper and two 3-hour written papers

  • Final EFFECTIVE from FS 2020

  • Two (2) SBA/MCQ papers;  Clinical and/or oral and/or OSCE and/or practical.

Medals

The ROWLAND A KRYNAUW MEDAL was endowed in 1981 by the late Dr Krynauw, and is awarded to candidates who shows particular distinction in the Fellowship examination of the College of Neurosurgeons of South Africa.

Release of FC Neurosurg(SA) Final results

Please note that the results for the FC Neurosurg(SA) Final examination will be released on the published date as per candidates' letter of acceptance into the examination.  If they are available earlier, the C Neurosurg will endeavour to inform candidates earlier of the provisional results.

Requirements


  • Primary: - Post-internship qualification registered with the HPCSA or any other medical council..





  • Intermediate: - completed not less than 12 months of approved training as a registered medical practitioner, in surgery.  Training during community service cannot be submitted. Of the 12 months training called for, not less than 6 months must be spent in neurosurgery, not less than 3 months must be spent in ICU and not less than 3 months in trauma/emergency surgery.






  • Final: - 36 months in a numbered registrar training post. Letter from HOD confirming completion and acceptance of Portfolio.
